Certification
& provenance.

For a coloured stone, an independent laboratory report is the difference between a claim and a fact, confirming the stone is natural, what treatment it carries, and, where possible, its origin.

Certification & provenance.

Origin is the part that matters most for Colombian material. Because “Muzo” carries a premium, an independent origin opinion from a respected laboratory is what turns a provenance story into something a buyer, a designer, or a house can rely on. Leading laboratories, among them GIA, Gübelin, SSEF, AGL, GRS and C. Dunaigre, assess a stone’s inclusions, chemistry and optical properties to reach that opinion. It is worth understanding that most laboratories evaluate and describe a coloured stone rather than assigning it a single overall grade the way a diamond is graded.

The practical rule is simple: for any emerald of consequence, the report should come from an independent laboratory, not from the seller alone.
